Mauritius Telecom Unveils Open-Source "Mauritius AI Registry"

Mauritius Telecom has stepped into the national AI conversation with the unveiling of the Mauritius AI Registry, an open-source catalogue of AI models, agents, and skills built specifically for local use.

A Sovereign Resource

Unlike generic global AI marketplaces, the registry is designed around local relevance — tools built around Mauritian law, school curricula, and dialects. The idea, Gungadin explained, is that as “software has become cheaper to build,” smaller local teams can now assemble solutions tailored to Mauritius rather than relying entirely on imported platforms.

By keeping the registry open-source and nationwide, Mauritius Telecom is positioning it as shared infrastructure — a place where developers, public institutions, and businesses can discover and reuse AI components instead of building from scratch.

Rethinking an AI Tutor on Rodrigues

The registry announcement followed an earlier pilot on Rodrigues Island, where Mauritius Telecom tested an AI learning tool that let students study in Mauritian Creole. The tool was originally built as a personal AI tutor, but after concerns from parents and educators that it risked encouraging students to outsource their thinking, the project was recalibrated.

In its current form, the tool is aimed at teachers rather than students directly — helping with test creation, tracking student progress, and generating feedback, while keeping the teacher in control of the learning process.

Why It Matters

The Mauritius AI Registry lands just weeks after the government’s own National AI Strategy and FAIR Guidelines, and reflects a broader pattern: both public and private sector actors in Mauritius are racing to build AI infrastructure that reflects local context rather than importing it wholesale. For a small island economy, that emphasis on sovereignty and language may prove just as important as the technology itself.
