Mauritius Signs "Seizing the AI Opportunity" Statement in New York

Mauritius has signed the "Seizing the AI Opportunity – AI Opportunity Statement," a US-led initiative, at a signing event in New York. The statement was signed by Minister Dhananjay Ramful on 23 September 2026, during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

What the statement covers

The initiative focuses on innovation, entrepreneurship, trusted partnerships and economic opportunity. Participation gives Mauritius a route to accelerate existing national AI programmes through partnerships in several areas:

• AI compute and infrastructure
• Trusted connectivity
• Investment and R&D
• Skills development
• Cybersecurity and content provenance
• Startup development and access to global AI ecosystems

Why it matters

The signing brought together leaders from partner economies and the private sector to discuss the benefits of partnering with the United States on AI. For Mauritius, it formalises a channel to international AI infrastructure and startup networks, alongside the government's domestic AI strategy and the AI Unit under the Ministry of ICT and Innovation.

Minister Ramful also held a series of other bilateral meetings in New York during the UN General Assembly session.
