First-of-its-kind AI Innovation Lab Launched to Democratise Access to Emerging Technologies

Mauritius has inaugurated its first Artificial Intelligence Innovation Lab, at Cyber Tower 2 in Ebène, with Minister of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation Dr Avinash Ramtohul presiding over the launch. The facility marks a significant step toward broadening technological access across the country.

A partnership agreement was formalised between the Government of Mauritius and STEMpower, an organisation that supports Sub-Saharan African countries in establishing hands-on STEM infrastructure. Minister Ramtohul said the establishment of the AI Innovation Lab "is aligned with the National AI Strategy and the FAIR Guidelines," positioning Mauritius as "a modern, high-tech and innovation-driven digital economy."

The lab features two operational sections:

• An AI Training Lab, equipped with 24 computers and Microsoft Office packages.
• An Electronic Lab, containing robotics equipment and circuit-design tools.

STEMpower's CEO said the facility "marks an important milestone for the country," while the Head of the AI Unit expressed confidence that additional labs will expand across the island.

The facility operates Monday to Friday, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, serving students, entrepreneurs, professionals, and civil society members by appointment.
