AI Readiness Survey Launched to Empower Mauritian Businesses

Mauritius has taken a significant step toward understanding and accelerating artificial intelligence adoption among local businesses with the launch of the "AI Adoption, Readiness and Governance Survey for Mauritian Businesses."

The survey, unveiled on 28 July 2026 at the Mauritius Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) in Port Louis, is a joint initiative between the MCCI, the Outsourcing and Telecommunications Association of Mauritius (OTAM), and CAPFOR Mauritius. It was officially launched by Minister Dr Avinash Ramtohul, with MCCI President Patrice Marie, OTAM President Jenny Chan, and CAPFOR Mauritius Managing Director Frédéric Romann in attendance.

What the survey covers

Branded the "AI Business Barometer," the survey is designed to evaluate AI adoption levels among Mauritian businesses of all sizes across three key domains:

• AI integration across different sectors of the economy
• Organizational readiness — infrastructure and workforce skills
• Governance frameworks — data protection, regulatory compliance, and ethical standards

The results will establish a baseline that can be used to track the country's AI adoption progress over time.

Why it matters

The initiative supports the government's broader ambition to grow the ICT sector's contribution to GDP from its current 5.4% to between 10% and 12%. It complements existing government efforts including a dedicated AI Unit, the National AI Strategy, AI laboratories, and various training programs aimed at building local AI capacity.

Speaking at the launch, Minister Ramtohul underscored a human-centered approach to AI adoption, noting that "AI should complement human capabilities rather than replace them."

Mauritian businesses interested in contributing to the AI Business Barometer are encouraged to participate in the survey as it rolls out, helping shape a clearer, evidence-based picture of the country's AI readiness.
